Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard 2005

Name: Pax Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard
Vintage: 2005
Varietal: Syrah
Winery: Pax Syrah
Region: USA > California > Mendocino County
Price: $49.95
SnoothRank: 4/5

Winecast's Rating: 4/5
Winecast's Review: Opaque purple-garnet in the glass with aromas of blackberry, bacon, chaparral and black licorice. Rich and concentrated blackberry and black raspberry fruit in the mouth with white pepper and mint finishing long with firm tannins. A very well balanced and delicious New World Syrah. I would cellar for at least another 5 years or decant for 3 hours before serving.

As posted on Snooth

Ripe apricot, fig and white peach flavors with a nice creamy lees component, minerality and orange peel from mid-palate to the finish. Perhaps just a touch too much oak for me but still nicely done.
Blackberry, black pepper and spice flavors finishing with medium firm tannins and a bit of heat. More structured than the regular release with nice body but not nearly as jammy in the fruit department. The heat is the main difference here.
Ripe black current, licorice, menthol and pencil lead aromas. Rich and mouth-filling blackberry and current fruit with some cracked pepper and chocolate finishing with dusty, but still noticeable, tannins and good acidity. This must have been a tannic monster at release but has now settled down and is drinking quite well. Given it’s maturity and price point, I think this is a nice value in Cabernet that will hold for another year before decline.
